About Mitsubishi Tires
The Mitsubishi group is one of the largest and most powerful corporate conglomerates in Japanese history. With a history that dates all the way back to 1870, it’s no wonder why Mitsubishi Motors is regarded as one of the best automotive brands worldwide. Mitsubishi holds the honour of the first Japanese domestically mass-produced car, the Mitsubishi Model A. The car had a solid build, but was deemed expensive and was discontinued quickly. During the Second World War, Mitsubishi’s responsibilities would focus on manufacturing aircraft for the Japanese military, and the company would remain out of the limelight until the 1960s. This was when Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was officially incorporated, as the success of early models like the Debonair and Galant proved the operation could stand on its own.
As the economy of Japan grew, so did the global prestige of Mitsubishi motors. American buyers could buy the Dodge Colt (a rebadged Galant) thanks to a partnership with Chrysler. Mitsubishi’s subcompacts also saw success across Europe, and by the 1980s they were producing over 1 Million cars per year. Production had grown to a point that Mitsubishi actually began producing vehicles in the USA, via their plant in Normal, Illinois. The company’s reputation was now undeniable, Mitsubishi produced reliable, sporty, and uniquely Japanese cars and trucks. Vehicles like the Eclipse, and a rich history of winning World Rally Championships with the help of the Lancer Evolution, would propel Mitsubishi to global stardom. Indeed Mitsubishi’s rally history is so robust that the name has become synonymous with off-road success, especially since they have more victories in the grueling Dakar Rally than any other manufacturer. As they were also a manufacturing giant, their corporate clout would lead to many vehicle production partnerships. Their collaborations on public transit with Daimler AG (parent company of Mercedes-Benz), and engineering work in tandem with Volvo, would lead to the original design of the Smart ForTwo. Mitsubishi was also an engine supplier to Volkswagen throughout the early 2000s. Other projects would be completed with the help of companies like Suziki, Hyundai, and ultimately Nissan who took over the company and remains Mitsubishi’s controller today.
By the end of the early 2000s Mitsubishi was a household name across the world, at which point the decision was made to push EV technology forward. The MiEV (or Mini Electric Vehicle) debuted in 2009, and remains one of the smallest and most affordable electric cars today. This direct competition with the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3 demonstrated that Mitsubishi was as innovative as all the other world leaders. Currently Mitsubishi has taken it’s all-season off-road prowess and started specializing in SUVs. Models like the Outlander, Eclipse Cross, and RVR demonstrate that there’s a Mitsubishi for any family size. Their advanced all-wheel-drive systems, and tremendous warranty ensures that Canadian Mitsubishi’s are used across summer, winter, and everything in between.
